The Sautter Farmhouse will be open on Saturday, March 19th from 12 noon to 3 pm. Do some downtown shopping, grab some lunch, and then visit us at the Sautter Farmhouse. We have homemade Bonnets for sale for those Fourth Grade Students who will visit us during their NE History annual field trip.

Join us for our March Meeting. In person in the Portal Schoolhouse. We will start the meeting with our guest speaker John Adams, Sarpy County Liaison for Honor and Remember NE Chapter. John will open the meeting with info on the origin & symbolism of the Honor and Remember flag, their mission, criteria to receive an Honor & Remember flag, their mission, criteria to receive an Honor and Remember flag, and some background on a few members. After John’s presentation we will continue with our meeting. Everyone interested in history, education, & honoring our fallen hero’s are invited.

The Historical Society is planning for the year ahead. We plan to bring you the much loved past activities and also are working to plan some new educational activities. Our Board is hard at work and looking forward to seeing you all again. Our Board meets on Feb. 3rd to address some upcoming plans. One of those plans is a space at the Sump Memorial Library. We are working on a display!! Also we are joining up with the Library for a Pioneer Paperbacks Book Club. The next meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd at 10 am in the South Meeting Room at the Library. We are reading A Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. Check out & Pick up a copy of the current paperback at the front desk of the library and join us. This month’s general membership meeting will take place at 441 N Washington Street, at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary.

Pat Shannon will give a presentation about the historic home which was built around 1889 by Mr. Charles Behrendt, a prominent Papillion resident.

We will meet outside in front of the mortuary.  Please bring a lawn chair to sit in and enjoy the 20-25 minute discussion prior to our membership meeting. Discussion & questions are welcomed. All those who love history are welcome.

Please join us on Thursday, July 9th at 7 p.m. at the Historic Portal Schoolhouse for our General Membership Meeting.  We will be voting on five board members.  All members (who have been members for at least six months) are eligible to vote and are eligible to serve on the board.  We welcome all members and guests.  We will also be accepting a donation from Mr. Leland Lape, a donation of a cane once owned by a prominent Papillion resident.  Also, Bob & Karen Olson will talk about the Butterfly Bench now on display at the front of the schoolhouse.  Bring your lawn chair and join us outside on the lawn outside the school.

Bob & Karen Olson sponsored a butterfly bench celebrating the Marth & Rahn family who settled in Papillion in 1880-81. Bob & Karen are members and supporters of the Historical Society and we are proud to have their bench displayed at the school house.

On the front of the bench family members under the trees represent the connection and deep roots the family has in our community. On one side of the back of the bench the Marth/Rahn family homestead from the 1880’s is painted with a beautiful sunset.  On the other side Werner Park with the same beautiful sunset, which is the exact location of the previous family homestead. The cornfields of the 1880’s have given way to the growing Papillion community.

Once again the we are proud to be participating in Omaha Gives! The online giving holiday will take place May 20th from midnight to midnight. However, donations can be given online anytime prior to May 20th. Needs are even greater this year in the midst of COVID-19. Everyone is being affected in some way. Our monthly meetings are on hold, tours and activities are postponed until safer times.
This year the minimum donation is $1. Go to Facebook or Instagram and say why you donate to Omaha Gives and you have the opportunity to win $1000 for the non-profit of your choice! Mark your calendars so you can help us, as we join other local non-profits to raise money together and compete for matching funds and prize money. Money raised for PAHS helps us pay our utility bills and maintain our three historic buildings, the John Sautter farmhouse, the Portal one-room school and the antique privy.
